The story of neo-cool Enid (Thora Birch) and Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) who, faced with graduation from high school, take a hard look at the world they wryly observe and decide what they really want.

In Ghost World both Enid (Birch) and Rebecca (Johansson) are painted as rebellious, quirky outsiders as they graduate high school in the opening sequence, but as the film progresses it’s clear that Rebecca (despite her viciously no-holds-barred approach to most other human beings) is much better at blending in to the environment in which she finds herself than Enid; she’s the one that gets the steady job, and pushes for the new flat, while Enid’s outwardly rebellious nature and disgust for anything she perceives to be ‘normal’ act as a constant barrier.
